Ambassadors Of Consumerism And Materialism

Culture offers us a sense of who we are as individuals and who we are in relation to others. It is the very fabric that defines our role in society. With culture having such of profound influence on identity, society needs to be more critical of how culture is influenced. This begs the question: What is the driving force responsible for creating and distributing meaning in contemporary culture? The answer is, advertising.

Advertising agencies have become the self-appointed ambassadors of consumerism and materialism in contemporary culture. Advertising has taken this power and used it for the purpose of developing culturally based consumption ideology. Simply stated, advertising is the vehicle responsible for shifting the landscape of social life and transporting cultural meaning from products to consumers. And in a free market, this is what needs to happen to meet the bottom line and keeps the every growing production of industrial capitalism moving forward, but at what cost?
